Background of the study:
Emotional intelligence (EI) is increasingly recognized as a crucial factor in effective workplace conflict resolution, especially in high-stress environments such as hospitals. In Owerri North, Imo State, hospital workers regularly face interpersonal conflicts arising from high-pressure situations and diverse professional backgrounds (Brown, 2024). This study investigates the role of EI in managing and resolving conflicts within healthcare settings. Employees with high emotional intelligence tend to exhibit better communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills, all of which contribute to smoother conflict resolution processes (Adams, 2023). The research explores how EI training programs can enhance collaboration and reduce workplace tensions, ultimately leading to improved patient care and organizational harmony (Clark, 2025). Through qualitative interviews and quantitative assessments, the study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating emotional intelligence into conflict management strategies. Additionally, the study considers the cultural and organizational factors that may influence the efficacy of EI initiatives. Overall, the investigation seeks to demonstrate that fostering emotional intelligence among hospital workers is vital for sustaining a supportive and efficient healthcare environment.

Statement of the problem:
Hospital workers in Owerri North often encounter conflicts that affect team performance and patient care. The lack of effective conflict resolution strategies, compounded by low levels of emotional intelligence, has resulted in prolonged interpersonal tensions (Adams, 2023). This study addresses the need to understand and enhance EI as a tool for mitigating conflicts in high-stress healthcare settings. It seeks to determine how improved emotional intelligence can foster more effective conflict resolution, thereby improving workplace dynamics (Brown, 2024; Clark, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  • To investigate the role of emotional intelligence in resolving workplace conflicts among hospital workers.

  • To identify the key emotional intelligence skills that contribute to conflict resolution.

  • To propose strategies for integrating EI training into hospital management practices.

Research questions:

  • How does emotional intelligence affect conflict resolution among hospital workers?

  • What specific EI skills are most beneficial in resolving workplace conflicts?

  • How can hospitals implement EI training to improve conflict management?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Higher levels of emotional intelligence lead to more effective conflict resolution.

  • EI training programs significantly reduce workplace conflicts.

  • Enhanced EI correlates with improved team collaboration and patient care.

Significance of the study:
This study highlights the importance of emotional intelligence in fostering effective conflict resolution in hospital settings. Its findings offer actionable insights for hospital administrators to improve team dynamics and overall patient outcomes (Clark, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to hospital workers in Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo State, focusing solely on the role of emotional intelligence in workplace conflict resolution. It does not include other conflict management strategies or different healthcare settings.

Definitions of terms:

  • Emotional intelligence: The ability to perceive, use, understand, and manage emotions effectively.

  • Conflict resolution: The process of resolving disputes and disagreements in a constructive manner.

  • Workplace conflict: Disagreements and tensions between employees that impact organizational performance.
